Ambedkar Nagar Murder Accused Killed in Police Encounter in Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh police have shot dead a youth accused of brutally murdering a mother and her four children in an encounter. The accused, identified as 19-year-old Aamir, was killed early Monday morning near the Nevataria bypass in Ambedkar Nagar district.

According to police reports, they received information that Aamir was attempting to flee the district. A cordon was established to apprehend him. When signalled to stop his motorcycle, Aamir allegedly opened fire on the police team. In the ensuing retaliatory gunfire, Aamir sustained fatal injuries. Two police personnel, including the SOG in-charge Vinod Yadav whose bulletproof jacket was hit, and a sub-inspector, were injured during the encounter.

Initial Investigation and Shift in Theory

The case began with the discovery of the bodies of four children on May 2. The children, aged between 7 and 14, were found bludgeoned to death with bricks inside their home in the Moradabad locality. Initially, the police suspected the children’s mother, Ghaziya Khatoon, might be involved, especially after she went missing. This theory was supported by reports suggesting she was in distress due to her husband’s alleged remarriage abroad.

However, the investigation took a significant turn when Ghaziya Khatoon’s body was found in a drain approximately 100 meters from her home on Sunday evening. Her post-mortem report indicated ante-mortem injuries, specifically a head injury suspected to have been inflicted by a blunt object, leading police to reconsider their initial assumptions. The possibility of a third party’s involvement gained traction.

Accused Identified and Apprehended

Through an examination of nearby CCTV footage and DVRs, and by speaking with the deceased’s husband and neighbours, the name of Aamir, a neighbour of the victim family, surfaced as a suspect. Police learned that Aamir was a frequent visitor to the house and had allegedly been absconding since the incident. Some reports suggest that Aamir had a criminal record, with previous cases registered against him for murder and other offences. He was reportedly released from jail approximately five months prior to the incident.

The motive for the quintuple murder is suspected to be a combination of obsessive affection and greed for property. Police believe Aamir may have intended to marry the woman and take possession of her assets.

In the early hours of Monday, based on specific intelligence inputs about Aamir’s attempt to flee, police teams were dispatched to Sudari Afzalpur village. When the officers attempted to apprehend him, Aamir allegedly opened fire, leading to the retaliatory exchange in which he was killed.

The encounter comes days after the gruesome discovery of the children’s bodies, which had sent shockwaves across the region. Following the encounter, additional police presence has been deployed in the area to maintain calm.
