Outer Delhi: Watchman Crushed to Death by SUV After Being Attacked

A brutal incident unfolded in outer Delhi’s Peeragarhi village on Sunday, where a 60-year-old watchman was allegedly assaulted by an SUV driver and subsequently run over twice, resulting in his death. The entire sequence of the violent act was captured on CCTV footage, according to police reports.

Fatal Attack Captured on Camera

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the deceased has been identified as Bijender Bharadwaj, a resident of Peeragarhi village. He was employed as a watchman at the tempo stand where the incident took place.

Preliminary analysis of the CCTV footage suggests that the victim might have been deliberately targeted, a police official informed PTI. Investigators are reportedly examining all possible angles of the crime.

The harrowing CCTV footage shows the SUV parked in a corner with its headlights illuminated for several minutes, while the watchman was seated on a chair facing away from the vehicle. Subsequently, an individual emerged from the SUV, armed with a large stick, and proceeded to attack Bharadwaj without any apparent provocation.

As the watchman attempted to flee from his assailant, the attacker retreated to the SUV and drove it towards Bharadwaj, running over him once and forcing him towards a corner of the area. In a further act of violence, as the victim tried to escape for a second time, the accused again maneuvered the vehicle towards him, running over him a second time before making a swift escape from the scene.

Investigation Underway

Police personnel who inspected the site discovered skid marks, indicating that the vehicle had braked either before or during the assault and subsequent collisions. A PCR call regarding the incident was received by the authorities at approximately 4:03 am on Sunday, prompting the immediate dispatch of a local police team to the location.

Upon arrival, Bijender Bharadwaj was found lying unconscious on the road. He was promptly transported to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead by medical professionals.

Authorities have registered a case at the Paschim Vihar West police station under sections 103(1) (murder) and 3(5) (common intentions) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The vehicle involved in the incident fled the scene, and efforts are currently underway to identify its registration number and ownership details.

“Detailed scrutiny of CCTV footage installed in and around the area revealed that the deceased was run over twice by a four-wheeler. The footage is being examined thoroughly to identify the vehicle and reconstruct the exact sequence of events and what led to the matter,” the officer stated, emphasizing the rigorous examination of available evidence.

Multiple police teams have been deployed to track down the accused driver and the vehicle. Forensic and other specialized teams have visited the scene, collecting both forensic and technical evidence to aid in the investigation.

Victim’s Family Appeals for Justice

Meanwhile, a relative of the deceased expressed shock and stated that Bharadwaj had no known enmities or disputes with anyone. Sunil Bharadwaj, a nephew of the victim, recounted, “We came to know about the incident around 3:30 pm. My uncle has been working here as a security guard for the past one year. He was a simple man and had no enmity or dispute with anyone. Anyone here can tell you that he never fought with anybody.”

Sunil Bharadwaj also noted that while the police examined the CCTV footage, the vehicle’s number plate was not discernible in the available recordings.

The police are continuing to scan CCTV footage from surrounding roads, traffic intersections, and commercial establishments to trace the movement of the SUV both before and after the fatal incident, aiming to piece together the complete timeline and identify the perpetrator.
