A devastating fire in West Delhi’s Vishnu Garden neighbourhood early Wednesday morning resulted in the tragic death of a 13-year-old boy and left his 65-year-old grandmother with significant burn injuries. The blaze, which authorities believe originated from an electric scooter, rapidly engulfed a portion of their house, spreading to domestic items on the ground floor.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) received the initial distress call at approximately 2:43 am. The location of the incident was specified as Gali No. 9, Vishnu Garden, in the Khayala area. Responding swiftly to the emergency, the DFS dispatched a single water tender and a water bowser, with the operation overseen by Station Officer Batti Lal. As the situation escalated with multiple subsequent calls received between 2:50 am and 2:52 am, two additional water bowsers were deployed to bolster efforts in containing the rapidly spreading flames. Assistant Divisional Officer RK Sinha also arrived at the scene to coordinate the response.
Firefighting efforts were successful in bringing the fire under control by 3:10 am, and the official “stop” message, indicating the cessation of active firefighting, was issued at 4:10 am. Preliminary assessments by fire officials suggest that the ignition source was an electric scooter parked within the premises. The fire subsequently spread to other household belongings situated on the ground floor, exacerbating the damage and intensity of the blaze.
Prior to the arrival of the fire department personnel, local residents and personnel from the Police Control Room (PCR) took immediate action to assist the victims. Two injured individuals were successfully transported to Guru Govind Hospital in Raghubir Nagar. Tragically, hospital doctors pronounced the 13-year-old boy dead upon arrival. The grandmother, identified as Swamjeet Kaur, sustained approximately 35 per cent burn injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment. The extent and nature of her injuries are being closely monitored by the medical staff.
An investigation into the precise cause of the fire has been initiated by the relevant authorities. This incident underscores the growing concerns surrounding the safety of electric vehicles, particularly their batteries, and the potential fire hazards they can pose when charging or stored in residential areas. The Delhi Fire Service has previously issued advisories regarding the safe charging and storage of electric two-wheelers, emphasizing the importance of using certified chargers and ensuring adequate ventilation to prevent overheating.
