A local court in Amritsar has extended the police custody of Abhijit Singh, the suspect apprehended for an alleged act of sacrilege within the Golden Temple complex, by five days. The decision comes after Singh’s initial one-day remand expired.
The Chenab Times has learned that Singh, a resident of Saharanpur, was arrested on Thursday. According to reports, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) employees apprehended him while he was allegedly attempting to take a sacred object, identified as Sri Sahib, from the shrine. Following the incident, a complaint was lodged by the SGPC, leading to Singh being booked under charges related to hurting religious sentiments.
During the court proceedings, Assistant Commissioner of Police Surinder Singh presented the suspect after his initial custody period. The court granted the extended remand, stating it was necessary for further interrogation and comprehensive investigation into all aspects of the case. Authorities indicated that every possible lead is being examined to ensure justice is served.
As part of the ongoing investigation, police teams have been dispatched to Saharanpur, Singh’s hometown.
