Three individuals have been apprehended in connection with the killing of a Dalit man in Sant Kabir Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, following a murder that had sparked communal tension and protests in the region. The arrests were confirmed by local police officials on Saturday.
The victim, identified as Anand Kumar, a 30-year-old Dalit man, was allegedly attacked and killed with a sharp-edged weapon near Babhni Bazaar on Thursday evening. According to reports, Anand was returning home when the assailants intercepted him. The incident led to significant unrest, with the victim’s family and villagers staging protests and blocking roads to demand swift justice and the immediate arrest of those responsible.
The Uttar Pradesh Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) naming three suspects: Nasir Ali, Nirahu, and Jaigham, along with an unidentified individual. Nasir Ali, who runs a meat shop, has been identified as the main suspect in the case. Nirahu, who operates a barber shop, and Jaigham were also arrested alongside Nasir. Police stated that the arrested individuals have been produced before a court and subsequently remanded to judicial custody.
The murder occurred amidst escalating tensions that followed an alleged dispute during a local function approximately ten days prior. Preliminary investigations suggest the motive may stem from a personal rivalry. Reports indicate that the victim’s niece had reportedly complained to Anand that Nasir Ali had harassed her during the function. This alleged confrontation is believed to have fueled the animosity that culminated in the fatal attack.
In the aftermath of the killing, an enraged mob reportedly set fire to the house of the main accused, Nasir Ali. Senior police and administrative officials were dispatched to the village to manage the situation, engaging in talks with the victim’s family and local residents. The protests eventually subsided after officials assured the family of a thorough investigation, prompt arrests, and stringent legal action against all involved parties.
The authorities have deployed additional police personnel and intensified security measures in the Bakhira area to maintain law and order and prevent any further escalation of violence. The victim’s body was sent for a post-mortem examination. The investigation into the precise sequence of events and the roles of each accused is ongoing.
The Sant Kabir Nagar district, particularly the Bakhira police station area, has seen heightened security following the incident. Police teams have conducted searches across multiple locations in Sant Kabir Nagar, Basti, and Ambedkar Nagar districts to apprehend any other individuals potentially involved in the crime. The case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
