Akal Takht Jathedar Demands Action Against Uttarakhand Leader Over Anti-Sikh Remarks

AMRITSAR: The Akal Takht Jathedar, Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj, has urged the government of Uttarakhand to take stringent action against a leader of the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal following the circulation of a video allegedly containing anti-Sikh remarks. The Jathedar stated that such pronouncements pose a significant threat to national peace, harmony, and communal amity.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the Jathedar specifically referenced a viral video in which the leader, identified as Ashish Negi of the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal, allegedly made disparaging comments about the Sikh community. Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj emphasized that individuals making such statements fail to acknowledge the substantial sacrifices and martyrdoms of the Sikh people, which have significantly contributed to the country’s present-day freedom. He warned that such expressions could lead to serious repercussions.

The Jathedar articulated his concern that Negi’s statement appeared to reveal a “deep-rooted anti-Sikh hatred” harboured by certain disruptive elements. He advised members of the Sikh community to exercise caution and remain vigilant against such individuals, recommending they avoid being provoked, particularly when travelling within Uttarakhand. The spiritual leader stressed the responsibility of the Uttarakhand government to ensure the safety and security of Sikh pilgrims and visitors to the state.

He further alleged that there have been repeated attempts by some individuals in Uttarakhand to challenge the Sikh community’s right to wear the ‘Kakaars,’ which are five articles of faith. Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj pointed to instances where local individuals allegedly targeted Sikhs during pilgrimages, initially focusing on their religious symbols and attire, and subsequently escalating the issue to a communal level, thereby creating tensions between the communities. He implored the state administration to identify and take decisive action against all those responsible for inciting such discord.

The Akal Takht Jathedar issued a stern warning that if such behaviour continues unchecked, the Sikh community may be compelled to re-evaluate their travel plans to Uttarakhand. He underscored the importance of maintaining an environment where all communities can coexist peacefully and without fear.

In addition to urging government action, the Jathedar directed the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to initiate legal proceedings against Ashish Negi from Amritsar. This legal recourse is intended to address the alleged threat and the anti-Sikh remarks made by Negi in the viral video, holding him accountable for his words and actions.

The Jathedar’s statements come at a time when inter-community relations and the protection of minority rights are subjects of significant public discourse across India. The emphasis on ensuring the safety of travelling communities and addressing hate speech aims to uphold the secular fabric of the nation and prevent the spread of communal disharmony.
