Himachal Pradesh Governor Inaugurates Artificial Limb Distribution Camp in Shimla

Himachal Pradesh Governor Kavinder Gupta on Tuesday inaugurated an artificial limb distribution camp held at Lok Bhawan in Shimla. The event, organised by the non-governmental organisation ACT Humane in collaboration with the Himachal Pradesh State Red Cross Society, aimed to provide mobility and support to individuals with disabilities.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that approximately 15 beneficiaries from various districts across Himachal Pradesh, including Una, Kangra, Rohru, Shimla, and Sirmaur, received artificial limbs. These assistive devices are intended to help the recipients regain mobility and enhance their ability to lead more independent lives. The beneficiaries, who span different age groups, were previously identified and assessed at a registration camp conducted by ACT Humane at the state Red Cross building on June 4.

The Governor commended ACT Humane for its dedicated humanitarian efforts, describing the organisation’s work as an exemplary demonstration of selfless service. He also praised the collaborative spirit between ACT Humane and the Himachal Pradesh State Red Cross Society for their commitment to providing modern assistive devices free of cost to persons with disabilities.

Governor Gupta urged individuals to actively participate in and benefit from such welfare programmes. He further counselled persons with disabilities to never perceive themselves as helpless or inferior, emphasising that every individual possesses significant inner strength and potential. He underscored that with determination, self-belief, and appropriate support systems, anyone can achieve a fulfilling and independent existence.

The Governor also stressed the collective responsibility of society to foster an environment that ensures equal opportunities, accessibility, and inherent dignity for all persons with disabilities. This sentiment underscores the importance of inclusive societal development.

Earlier in the proceedings, Harleen Kaur, the founder of ACT Humane, provided the Governor with a detailed overview of the organisation’s various humanitarian initiatives. She informed him that ACT Humane has a track record of conducting similar artificial limb distribution camps in other districts, including Solan, Kangra, Dharamsala, and Mandi, where a substantial number of beneficiaries have received prosthetic limbs without any financial burden.

Beyond the provision of assistive devices, Kaur elaborated that ACT Humane extends financial assistance to patients in need to facilitate their medical treatment. This multifaceted approach reflects the organisation’s comprehensive commitment to supporting individuals facing health challenges.

Harleen Kaur also drew attention to ACT Humane’s ongoing endeavors to enhance accessibility throughout Himachal Pradesh. The organisation has been instrumental in developing disability-friendly public spaces, such as the Children’s Park in Solan and Rani Jhansi Park and Brockhurst in Shimla. These developments aim to ensure that wheelchair users can access and enjoy recreational areas with greater ease and comfort, promoting greater social inclusion.

Yogesh Sharma, the state manager for ACT Humane, also provided the Governor with an update on the organisation’s current welfare initiatives and ongoing activities within the state. His remarks detailed the continued efforts to extend support and services to the community.
