A Deputy Superintendent of the Central Jail in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, has been arrested in connection with an investigation into a purported viral video recorded by a gangster from within the prison premises. Information was available with The Chenab Times that Harbhajan Singh, serving as Deputy Superintendent at the Central Jail, was taken into custody by the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) Staff during the intervening night of July 4 and July 5. The arrest is linked to a First Information Report (FIR) that was registered at the City Police Station in Hoshiarpur on June 14.
Authorities have stated that the jail official has been booked under relevant provisions of the Punjab Prisons and Correctional Services Act, the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The case originates from a video allegedly recorded by Manpreet Singh, also known as Manna, a resident of Talwandi Sabo in the Bathinda district of Punjab. In the circulated video, Manpreet Singh alleged that he and other inmates were subjected to harassment by jail personnel. He also claimed that demands for money were being made and that narcotics were readily available within the prison. Furthermore, the gangster alleged that some jail staff were involved in assaulting inmates. He appealed directly to the Punjab Chief Minister, Bhagwant Mann, calling for reforms within the prison system and seeking opportunities for inmates to improve their lives.
