Gurugram, Haryana – A significant expansion of the metro network in Gurugram is set to transform daily travel for millions, connecting the city’s older and newer sectors through an extensive 28.5-kilometer loop. The project, sanctioned by the Union Cabinet and spearheaded by Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL), aims to enhance connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and stimulate economic growth across the region.
Project Scope and Connectivity
The ambitious metro corridor will stretch from Millennium City Centre to Cyber City, featuring a 1.85-kilometer spur line from Basai Village to the Dwarka Expressway. This hemicyclic route is designed to bridge the gap between the established commercial hubs and the densely populated older parts of Gurugram, ensuring that areas previously underserved by public transport are now integrated into the metro grid.
The new line will boast 27 elevated stations, strategically positioned to serve key residential, institutional, and commercial areas. Notable stations will include Millennium City Centre, Sector 45, Cyber Park, Subhash Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk, Udyog Vihar Phase 6, Sector 10, Basai Village, and Cyber City. The project also envisions seamless integration with existing and upcoming transit networks, including the Delhi Metro’s Yellow Line at Millennium City Centre, the Rapid Metro, and the Delhi-Alwar Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) at Cyber City. Interchange points are also planned at Subhash Chowk for a proposed railway station and Bhondsi metro line, and at Hero Honda Chowk for the RRTS corridor.
Infrastructure and Development
A dedicated metro depot is planned in Sector 33 to cater to the maintenance and operational needs of the expanded network. The project’s engineering plans include innovative solutions for navigating congested urban areas, such as the evaluation of double-decker station designs along narrow stretches in Old Gurgaon, a measure aimed at minimizing land acquisition and traffic disruption.
The estimated cost for this extensive project is approximately ₹5,452.72 crore. Construction is being undertaken by various joint ventures, with Phase 1, covering a significant portion of the corridor, awarded to Dilip Buildcon Ltd. and Ranjit Buildcon Ltd. The project is being executed in phases, with initial groundwork and construction activities already underway. Officials are optimistic about the project’s timeline, with a target completion date set for mid-2027, and trial runs anticipated in early 2027.
Impact on Urban Mobility and Economy
The new metro corridor is expected to significantly alleviate traffic congestion on Gurugram’s arterial roads, which have long struggled to cope with the city’s rapid growth. By providing a reliable and efficient public transport option, the project aims to improve last-mile connectivity, reduce travel times, and enhance the overall quality of life for commuters. Furthermore, the enhanced connectivity is poised to boost real estate development and commercial growth, particularly in the rapidly developing Transit Oriented Development (TOD) zones along the Dwarka Expressway and in the older sectors of the city.
The project’s development is a collaborative effort involving the Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL), a joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Haryana, alongside the Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation (HMRTC) and the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA). This extensive metro expansion represents a substantial investment in Gurugram’s future, reinforcing its position as a major economic and residential hub within the National Capital Region.
