Factionalism within the Punjab Congress resurfaced publicly on Saturday when party workers disrupted a state unit event in Patiala by raising slogans in favour of former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, while the current state president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring was addressing the gathering. The incident, which saw several senior Patiala Congress leaders absent from the programme, underscored existing divisions within the party, even as Punjab Congress in-charge Bhupesh Baghel was in attendance.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that as Mr. Warring took to the stage, a section of the assembled party workers began chanting slogans such as “Channi Liyao, Punjab Bachao” (Bring Channi, Save Punjab) and “Channi Liyao, Congress Bachao” (Bring Channi, Save Congress). The vociferous slogans momentarily halted Mr. Warring’s speech and appeared to cause him visible displeasure. He attempted to identify some of the individuals involved, but the pro-Channi sentiment intensified, filling the hall.
Adding to the disruption, four senior Congress leaders from Patiala, including sitting Member of Parliament Dr. Dharamvira Gandhi, did not attend the official party gathering. A former Member of the Legislative Assembly who also abstained from the event stated, “The Congress leadership should listen to the workers. You cannot disregard the workers and support leaders. Workers build the party, not leaders.”
The protest occurred during an organisational meeting convened as part of the Congress’s broader campaign to bolster its presence at the booth level across Punjab. In response to the disruption, Mr. Warring issued a stern warning, asserting that strict disciplinary action would be initiated against any individual found responsible for sabotaging the official party programme or damaging the party’s reputation. However, his admonition had minimal impact, with the sloganeering continuing and intensifying.
Despite the internal turmoil, the event proceeded. However, party workers present expressed concerns that such internal strife would ultimately benefit rival political parties. “A few months ago, there was discourse about a Congress resurgence in the state. However, with the escalating rift within the state Congress, the advantage now solely lies with the Aam Aadmi Party,” commented a former market committee chairman, reflecting the sentiment of many attendees.
This development follows reports indicating that Mr. Channi has been conspicuously absent from the organisational campaign initiatives spearheaded by Mr. Baghel and Mr. Warring. Sources suggest that Mr. Channi, along with MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, has reportedly missed several events linked to the campaign. This pattern of absence was also evident the previous day, when Mr. Channi did not attend a Congress programme in Fatehgarh Sahib, an event where Mr. Warring and leaders aligned with his faction were present.
The Punjab Congress has been grappling with internal disagreements regarding leadership and strategy, particularly in the aftermath of recent electoral performances. The resurgence of pro-Channi sentiment at a party event highlights the persistent support base the former Chief Minister commands among a segment of the party cadre. This continuous internal friction poses a significant challenge for the party’s efforts to unite and present a cohesive front in future electoral battles, potentially ceding ground to political opponents who can capitalize on these divisions.
