Two individuals have died and a woman is in critical condition following a severe road accident in Kapurthala district, Punjab. The incident occurred when an SUV reportedly lost control and crashed into multiple obstacles before coming to a halt.
The Chenab Times has learned that the tragic event unfolded on Wednesday night near Sawal in the Sultanpur Lodhi subdivision. The vehicle was travelling from Sultanpur Lodhi towards Talwandi Chaudhrian when it veered off the road. Initial reports indicate the SUV first collided with a roadside tree, then breached the iron grill of a private school, and finally struck another tree.
The force of the impact was devastating, leaving the SUV severely mangled. Debris from the vehicle, including tyres, windows, and other parts, were scattered across the road, underscoring the severity of the crash.
One of the deceased has been identified as Rahul Gill, a resident of Bidhipur village in Sultanpur Lodhi. He was declared dead at the scene. His body was transported to the mortuary of the Civil Hospital in Sultanpur Lodhi around 1 a.m.
The other occupants of the vehicle, 17-year-old Lahugli from Talwandi Bootian village in Jalandhar district, and 23-year-old Anjana Rani, wife of Rahul Gill, were immediately rushed to the Civil Hospital, Sultanpur Lodhi. Despite receiving first aid, Lahugli succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Anjana Rani remains in a critical condition and has been referred to a higher medical facility for specialized care after receiving initial treatment at the local hospital. The condition of the surviving occupant highlights the extreme violence of the collision.
Local police were alerted to the accident and promptly arrived at the scene to commence an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Preliminary assessments suggest that excessive speed or a sudden loss of control may have been contributing factors. However, authorities have stated that the precise cause of the accident will only be determined upon the completion of the ongoing investigation.
The accident has brought renewed attention to road safety measures in the region. The frequency of such accidents, often attributed to speeding or negligent driving, continues to be a concern for local law enforcement and residents alike. Investigations into such incidents typically involve examination of the vehicle, witness testimonies, and forensic analysis to establish fault and prevent future occurrences.
Road accidents, particularly those involving high speeds, can have catastrophic outcomes. The sequence of collisions described—striking a tree, breaching a school’s perimeter, and impacting another tree—suggests a prolonged and uncontrolled trajectory of the vehicle. The mangled state of the SUV is a grim testament to the forces involved in the impact.
The Sultanpur Lodhi area, like many rural and semi-urban regions, faces challenges in maintaining road infrastructure and enforcing traffic regulations effectively. Efforts by authorities to curb speeding and drunk driving remain a continuous process, often requiring a multi-pronged approach involving public awareness campaigns and stricter enforcement.
The families of the deceased and the injured have been informed, and the local administration is expected to provide necessary support during this difficult time. The investigation is expected to shed light on whether any external factors or mechanical failures contributed to the tragic loss of life and the severe injury sustained.
