SRINAGAR: Authorities have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, along with her daughter Iltija Mufti and four other party leaders. The FIR pertains to an alleged assault on a police officer during a PDP protest held earlier this week against the abrogation of Article 370.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the case has been registered under Sections 132, 121 and 191(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The protest took place on the night of August 4, one day before the seventh anniversary of the revocation of Article 370.
According to police statements, the protest escalated into a confrontation when a group of demonstrators allegedly attempted to breach security cordons. They reportedly blocked Residency Road and tried to march towards Lal Chowk despite repeated requests from security personnel to maintain order.
Police have accused Iltija Mufti of physically assaulting a police officer who was on duty during the ensuing confrontation. Officials claim she allegedly grabbed the officer and inflicted a bleeding bite injury on his forearm.
As part of the ongoing investigation, Iltija Mufti has been summoned to appear at Police Station Kothibagh on Friday to participate in the probe. Officials also stated that four other PDP leaders have been requested to extend their cooperation with the investigation.
The PDP, in its response, has accused authorities of insensitive actions. The party stated that police personnel visited the Mufti residence in Khimber and questioned Iltija while she was reportedly recovering from injuries sustained during the protest.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X, the PDP described the questioning of an injured individual undergoing medical treatment as “deeply insensitive.” The party urged the authorities to acknowledge her medical condition while ensuring that due legal process is followed.
Iltija Mufti had previously alleged that she was manhandled by police during the demonstration. She was admitted to a private hospital in Srinagar following the incident and later displayed injuries on her arms to the media before being discharged on Wednesday after receiving treatment.
The protest, which was led by Mehbooba Mufti, was organised with the primary objective of demanding the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s erstwhile special constitutional status, which was revoked by the central government in August 2019.
