JAMMU: Minister for Education Sakina Itoo visited Government Medical College (GMC) and Hospital, Jammu, on Monday to check on the students injured in a tragic road accident. The minister enquired about their health and the ongoing treatment being provided to them. Following the visit, Itoo announced that the government will order a probe into the incident.
Probe into the Accident Ordered
The accident occurred on Sunday night when a matador, a type of minibus, carrying students overturned on the Shakuntala flyover in Jammu city. Reports indicate that the vehicle was carrying over 25 students and was returning from Bagh-e-Bahu to Mubarak Mandi after participating in a Tiranga (Tricolour) Rally. At least 29 students sustained injuries, with three reported to be in critical condition. The injured were immediately rushed to GMC and Hospital, Jammu, for medical attention. Medical authorities stated that most of the students were out of danger, though some had suffered bone fractures.
The critically injured students were identified as Suhani Devi, 21, from Bhawal, Jammu; Arti Devi, 20, from Majalta, Udhampur; and Seema Devi, 27, from Atholi, Kishtwar. The matador, bearing registration number JK02BE-4479, was allegedly carrying 38 passengers despite having a seating capacity of only 16. The police have arrested the owner and driver of the vehicle in connection with the incident, with investigations focusing on rash driving and overcrowding.
Official Response and Investigation
In response to the accident, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed deep anguish and directed concerned authorities to provide all necessary medical facilities and assistance to the injured. The Office of the Chief Minister released a statement on X (formerly Twitter) conveying his concerns and well wishes for a speedy recovery. The accident has led to renewed focus on passenger safety and the operation of overcrowded vehicles. Police have seized the matador and are conducting further investigations into the accident and alleged violations.
