Srinagar’s road infrastructure is set for a significant upgrade with macadamisation work scheduled to begin within the next one to two weeks, according to an official spokesperson for the National Conference.
This initiative aims to address the long-standing issues of poor road conditions across the city, which have caused considerable inconvenience to commuters, residents, and businesses. The macadamisation drive is expected to improve road quality, enhance traffic flow, and contribute to the overall aesthetic and functional development of Srinagar.
Recent reports indicate a concerted effort by the Jammu and Kashmir administration to improve road connectivity throughout the Union Territory. Multiple projects, including the construction of new tunnels, bridges, and the expansion of highway networks, are underway to provide all-weather accessibility and boost economic activity. The Zojila Tunnel project, a significant engineering feat, is nearing completion and is poised to provide year-round connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh.
The Union Cabinet has also approved the construction of major tunnel projects, such as the Singhpora-Vailoo and Sudhmahadev-Dranga tunnels, aimed at strengthening connectivity between the Jammu and Kashmir divisions and improving the road network in districts like Udhampur, Doda, and Kishtwar. These projects are part of a broader strategy to enhance regional integration and provide alternative routes, also serving strategic defence needs.
The Jammu and Kashmir administration has been actively promoting infrastructure development, with a focus on both urban and rural road networks. A comprehensive macadamisation program was announced, with a significant allocation of funds to ensure the upgrade of fair-weather roads and the complete macadamisation of all roads within the Union Territory. Committees have been constituted at district levels to prioritize roadworks based on factors such as the last macadamisation date, current road quality, and public grievances.
The macadamisation process is crucial, especially in a region prone to extreme weather conditions. The timing of such works, typically from May to September, is vital for ensuring the durability and quality of the macadamisation, as winter conditions prevent such activities. Recent efforts have been made to address issues that previously caused delays, such as contractor concerns over rates, with assurances from the administration leading to their participation in the tendering process.
The overall development push in Jammu and Kashmir encompasses not only road infrastructure but also advancements in rail connectivity, tourism, and investment. The integration of the Kashmir Valley with the national railway network, the introduction of high-speed train services like Vande Bharat, and the development of new tourist destinations are contributing to a diversified economic landscape. These infrastructure improvements are seen as key drivers for socio-economic development, facilitating access to education, healthcare, and markets, and ultimately enhancing the quality of life for residents.
