Torrential rains have led to widespread disruptions across Himachal Pradesh, with approximately 200 roads remaining impassable, 45 transformers non-operational, and 39 water supply schemes affected.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the State Emergency Operation Centre has reported Mandi district as the most severely impacted, with 64 roads blocked. Kullu district follows closely with 60 road blockades, while Shimla has 32, Chamba 24, Sirmaur six, Kangra five, Una four, Lahaul and Spiti three, and Kinnaur two roads affected.
The power infrastructure has also suffered significant damage, with 35 disrupted transformers located in Sirmaur district alone. Chamba district has reported six affected transformers, Shimla three, and Mandi one. These disruptions are impacting electricity supply to residents in affected areas.
In addition to road and power issues, water supply has been severely compromised. A total of 39 water supply schemes are currently disrupted across the state. Shimla district is experiencing the highest number of water supply disruptions with 17 schemes affected. Chamba has 13 affected schemes, Mandi seven, and Hamirpur two, leading to water scarcity for many communities.
The Meteorological Department has forecast that light to moderate rainfall is expected to continue in several parts of Himachal Pradesh throughout the day. In anticipation of continued adverse weather conditions, a yellow alert has been issued for four districts: Solan, Mandi, Sirmaur, and Kinnaur. This alert signifies that conditions are favourable for hazardous weather, prompting authorities to take precautionary measures. The rest of the state is expected to experience dry weather conditions.
The ongoing monsoon activity has intensified rainfall across the Himalayan state, leading to landslides, road closures, and damage to essential infrastructure. Local administration and disaster management teams are actively working to clear roads and restore power and water supplies. Efforts are also underway to assess the full extent of the damage and provide necessary relief to affected populations.
The situation underscores the vulnerability of the region’s infrastructure to extreme weather events, a recurring challenge during the monsoon season. The state government has been urged to expedite measures for strengthening disaster preparedness and response mechanisms.
