JODHPUR: The Chief Justice of India has called upon India’s National Law Universities (NLUs) to proactively shape the integration of technology within the legal system, emphasizing the need to move beyond mere adaptation and instead lead in determining its future application. The directive encourages law institutions to ensure that technological advancements serve the core values of justice, fairness, and human judgment.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, speaking at the Vice Chancellors’ Conclave 2.0 at the National Law University, Jodhpur, stressed that the legal profession can no longer afford to lag in adopting technological tools. He specifically addressed the growing debate around generative artificial intelligence (AI), rejecting a complete prohibition on its use in legal education. Instead, he advocated for its transparent and supervised integration, allowing students to comprehend both its capabilities and limitations.
Embracing AI and Technology in Legal Pedagogy
The conclave, themed “Legal Technology and its Roadmap: Positioning Law as a Leader in Legal Technology,” provided a platform for discussions on the evolving landscape of legal practice. Chief Justice Kant highlighted that technology is already a significant force reshaping the legal ecosystem. Its influence spans crucial areas such as contract drafting, due diligence, legal research, evidence management, and dispute resolution.
He asserted that law schools must position themselves as the forefront of this transformation. Graduates of the future will increasingly encounter and utilize sophisticated tools capable of analyzing vast numbers of legal precedents instantaneously, identifying potential legal and regulatory risks, and supporting judicial and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. However, the Chief Justice cautioned that mere familiarity with technology would not suffice.
“A graduate who understands only the output of a technological tool would remain dependent on it, while one trained to question assumptions, verify conclusions and exercise independent judgment could use technology without surrendering responsibility,” he stated, underscoring the importance of critical thinking alongside technological proficiency.
Shaping the Future of Legal Technology
Addressing concerns that students might become overly reliant on AI, potentially diminishing their ability to construct arguments independently or misinterpreting AI-generated responses as definitive truths, Chief Justice Kant reiterated his stance against outright bans. He proposed that institutions that resist inevitable technological shifts risk losing their agency in guiding its development.
The Chief Justice urged law universities to anticipate technological advancements, influence their trajectory, and guarantee that technology evolves to support the law and its inherent values. This requires robust collaboration among National Law Universities to undertake serious research into areas such as algorithmic accountability, data protection, ensuring digital access to justice, and understanding the evolving interplay between technology and dispute resolution.
“Let technology make legal institutions and services more capable, but let our values determine the direction in which that capability is used,” he concluded, emphasizing that innovation should expedite justice without compromising its fairness.
