Himachal Pradesh is bracing for continued heavy rainfall, with the State Meteorological Centre issuing a yellow alert for all 12 districts on Wednesday. The advisory warns of potential landslides and flash floods in vulnerable areas across the mountainous state.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the inclement weather has already caused significant disruption. As many as 279 roads remain blocked throughout Himachal Pradesh due to the ongoing rains. Additionally, approximately 310 transformers and 84 water supply schemes have been impacted and are currently non-operational.
The State Emergency Operation Centre has provided a breakdown of the affected road network. Mandi district reports the highest number of blocked roads with 100, followed by Chamba with 83. Shimla has 26 roads closed, Kullu has 25, and Sirmaur has 16. Hamirpur reports eight blocked roads, Solan has five, and Una and Lahaul and Spiti each have four. Bilaspur has two roads that are inaccessible.
Similarly, disruptions to the power infrastructure are widespread. Lahaul and Spiti district has seen 101 transformers damaged or non-functional. Sirmaur follows with 78 affected transformers, while Mandi has 64. Shimla has 27 disrupted transformers, Solan has 15, and Una has 14. Hamirpur reports nine affected transformers, and Kullu has two.
The water supply infrastructure has also been significantly affected by the heavy downpour. Hamirpur district has the highest number of disrupted water supply schemes, with 32. Sirmaur reports 23 affected schemes, Shimla has 17, and Chamba has 10. Solan district has two disrupted water supply schemes.
In the state capital, Shimla, a landslide in the Bhattakufar area resulted in damage to two vehicles. Fortunately, no loss of life or injuries were reported in this specific incident. Teams from the district administration are currently engaged in clearing the debris from the affected site.
The persistent rainfall is a consequence of the monsoon system affecting the northern region of India. Such widespread precipitation in mountainous terrains like Himachal Pradesh often leads to increased instances of landslides and flash floods due to saturated soil and overflowing river systems. The yellow alert signifies that authorities need to be watchful and prepared for adverse weather conditions.
