The Union Cabinet has approved the establishment of a bench of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir in Ladakh, a decision aimed at improving access to justice for residents in the remote region.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the approval on Thursday, stating the move was undertaken under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In a social media post, Shah stated, “The Union Cabinet, under the leadership of the PM Shri @narendramodi Ji, has decided to set up a bench of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir in Ladakh.” He emphasized that the new bench will significantly reduce the time individuals in remote areas of Ladakh spend to access the legal services to which they are entitled.
The establishment of this judicial outpost signifies the government’s commitment to the comprehensive development of Ladakh and the safeguarding of constitutional rights for its citizens. This initiative is expected to streamline legal processes and provide a more accessible judicial recourse for the population of the Union Territory.
Ladakh, a Union Territory since August 2019, comprises the districts of Leh and Kargil. Historically, residents have faced challenges in accessing the High Court, which is located in Jammu and Srinagar. The considerable distances and logistical complexities often posed significant barriers to seeking legal remedies.
The High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh currently serves both Union Territories, with its principal seat in Srinagar and a winter sitting in Jammu. The addition of a dedicated bench in Ladakh is anticipated to alleviate the burden on citizens and the existing judicial infrastructure.
Officials have indicated that further details regarding the operational framework, staffing, and specific location of the bench will be communicated in due course. The move is seen as a crucial step towards ensuring equitable access to justice across all parts of the Union Territory.
This decision aligns with the broader agenda of strengthening governance and public service delivery in the newly formed Union Territory. Enhanced judicial accessibility is expected to contribute to the overall socio-economic development and legal certainty within Ladakh.
