Rescue teams are engaged in a massive search operation along the Nepal-China border following catastrophic flash floods and landslides that have claimed at least 350 lives and left over 1,300 people missing. The disaster was triggered by a glacial collapse in the Himalayas, sending a torrent of water and mud through communities in both Nepal and China’s Tibet Autonomous Region.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that as of Thursday, August 27, 2026, Nepal police reported 353 deaths and 826 missing individuals. The affected regions in Nepal include Nuwakot and Rasuwa districts, which have been hardest hit by the torrent. The missing in Nepal include tourists, security personnel, and local residents. Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported that 558 people were missing in Tibet, with 260 of them identified as foreigners. Three deaths were reported in Tibet.
The Nepal Tourism Board has stated that at least 65 American nationals are among the missing foreign nationals. In a subsequent update, the board reported that two U.S. nationals were among 27 foreign nationals rescued from the flood zone in the Rasuwa district. The U.S. Embassy in Nepal expressed condolences and stated it was working to account for U.S. citizens affected by the disaster, urging them to contact their families if possible, despite severe communication disruptions.
The scale of the disaster is immense, with reports indicating that dozens of bridges and approximately 40 kilometers of roads have been destroyed, severely hampering search and rescue efforts. The Nepalese army has deployed helicopters to rescue stranded individuals and deliver emergency supplies. The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in Kathmandu has noted that the region is vulnerable to such events due to steep slopes and the increasing frequency of extreme weather. Climate change and melting glaciers are cited as potential contributing factors to the disaster, including the possibility of glacial lake outburst floods.
The devastating floods have impacted a popular trekking and pilgrimage area. Many of the missing are foreign tourists, with nationalities reported including Indian, Australian, British, Canadian, German, Malaysian, and Israeli citizens. The Nepalese government has requested assistance from both India and China for the rescue operations.
The United Nations’ humanitarian chief, Tom Fletcher, announced the release of $2 million from the UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund to aid medical care, shelter, and water provision for those affected. Emergency teams have been mobilized, with additional units on standby. The disaster has caused widespread destruction, with images showing buildings inundated with mud, debris strewn across landscapes, and vehicles buried under the deluge.
