Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir – The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) has reiterated its firm stance that it will not join the current government’s cabinet unless the full statehood of Jammu and Kashmir is restored. The party emphasized that its support to the ruling National Conference is aimed at safeguarding the region’s communal harmony and unity, not at participating in governance under the current constitutional status.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that JKPCC President Tariq Hameed Karra clearly stated that the Congress party’s position has remained unchanged for the past two years. He clarified that while the Congress provides support to the National Conference-led government, this does not translate into an agreement to join the cabinet. Karra specified that the restoration of statehood, along with the protection of people’s rights over land, jobs, and natural resources, are the paramount demands of the party.
The JKPCC leadership affirmed their commitment to continuing support for the government in its efforts to counter the Bharatiya Janata Party and what they termed as divisive forces. However, Karra made it explicit that this support does not preclude the party from voicing concerns and issues that directly impact the populace. “Support does not mean silence,” Karra stated, adding that the Congress would stand in solidarity with the people and continue to advocate for their interests.
Karra also strongly criticized a recent increase in power tariffs, describing the decision as unjust and detrimental to consumers. He noted that the power tariff hike comes at a time when many consumers are already struggling with accumulated bills and the threat of disconnection. He argued that imposing additional financial burdens on the public under such circumstances is not in their best interest and urged the government to address the difficulties faced by ordinary consumers and protect their welfare.
The political landscape in Jammu and Kashmir has been shaped by the abrogation of Article 370 and the subsequent reorganization of the erstwhile state. A six-member cabinet, led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, was sworn in previously, with no Congress representation. The National Conference, a constituent of the INDIA opposition alliance, has maintained opposition to the revocation of Article 370. Following elections, the National Conference emerged as the largest party and formed a government with the support of the Congress, which has been providing external backing while keeping its options open regarding cabinet participation.
The Congress party’s consistent demand for the restoration of statehood highlights a significant point of contention in the region’s political discourse. The party’s decision to withhold cabinet participation underscores its strategy of leveraging its support to press for its core demands related to the constitutional status and regional autonomy of Jammu and Kashmir.
