A three-storey building located within the premises of the Swaminarayan temple in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, collapsed on Tuesday. No casualties have been reported in the incident.
The Chenab Times has learned that the structure, which was reportedly under construction, gave way around midday. Emergency services and local authorities were promptly dispatched to the scene to assess the situation and initiate rescue operations, though initial reports indicate no individuals were trapped in the debris.
According to temple authorities, the collapsed building was situated behind the main temple complex. Kamlesh Bhagat, identified as the ‘kothari’ of the Swaminarayan temple, stated that a construction project was actively underway in the vicinity of the collapsed structure. He further explained that a pit, dug for the purpose of this construction, had been filled with water for an extended duration, a factor potentially contributing to the structural instability that led to the collapse.
The Swaminarayan temple is a prominent religious site in Prayagraj, attracting numerous devotees and visitors. The incident has raised concerns about the ongoing construction activities within the temple complex and the adherence to safety protocols. Local residents expressed shock and concern over the collapse, particularly given its proximity to a place of worship.
Preliminary investigations by the local administration are expected to focus on the structural integrity of the construction work, the methods employed, and the potential role of water accumulation from the dug pit. Engineers and safety inspectors are likely to be involved in determining the precise cause of the building’s failure.
The Prayagraj administration has initiated a probe into the incident to ascertain the exact reasons behind the collapse. Officials have assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted to ensure accountability and prevent future occurrences. The area around the collapsed building has been cordured off by the police to ensure public safety and facilitate the ongoing assessment by relevant authorities.
This incident underscores the importance of stringent safety measures in all construction projects, especially those undertaken in sensitive or public areas. The authorities are expected to review the building plans and safety clearances for the ongoing work at the temple premises.
