At least 37 people were killed and 42 others injured following a Russian attack on the Bucha district, near the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, officials reported on Saturday. The attack, which occurred on the evening of August 28, involved a drone strike that subsequently triggered massive secondary explosions at an enterprise in the village of Myla. The full extent of casualties is still being assessed, with officials indicating that the death toll could potentially rise.
The Kyiv Regional Military Administration stated that among the injured were four children, with seven individuals requiring hospitalization. A total of 381 people, including 59 children, were evacuated from the affected area. Emergency rescue and firefighting operations, along with structural dismantling and searches for individuals, were ongoing at the scene. Early reports suggest that approximately 50 residential buildings sustained varying degrees of damage.
According to Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, Taras Didych, the head of the Dmytrivka community, was among those killed. Didych was reportedly one of the first responders to arrive at the scene. The administration confirmed that a criminal investigation has been launched into official negligence surrounding the incident.
In a statement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that a warehouse was struck in the village of Myla, leading to a detonation. The incident has drawn international condemnation, with calls for independent investigations into the circumstances of the civilian deaths. Similar incidents have occurred previously in the region; on July 6, 2026, a similar event in Vyshneve, Kyiv Oblast, following a Russian strike, resulted in prolonged explosions at ammunition warehouses, causing nine deaths and damaging over 280 houses.
The Bucha district has been a focal point of intense fighting and alleged atrocities during the ongoing conflict. In March 2022, widespread reports of mass killings of civilians by Russian forces emerged after their withdrawal from the city. Investigations by international bodies and news organizations have documented evidence of summary executions, torture, and indiscriminate killings, with estimates of civilian deaths in the hundreds during that period. The United Nations and human rights organizations have called for thorough investigations to ensure accountability for alleged war crimes.
