Jammu and Kashmir is anticipated to experience a period of rain over the next 24 to 48 hours, according to the Meteorological Department, which has predicted brief intense showers and gusty winds. Authorities have also issued a warning regarding potential landslides, mudslides, and flash floods in vulnerable areas across the Union Territory.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that weather conditions are expected to become somewhat unsettled from Monday late afternoon and evening, with the Jammu division likely to witness more significant rainfall. The Director of the Meteorological Department Jammu & Kashmir, Mukhtar Ahmad, stated that some areas may experience light rain, accompanied by brief intense showers and gusty winds.
He further elaborated that heavier rainfall spells are most likely in the Jammu division from late Monday night into Tuesday morning, and again between Tuesday late night and Wednesday early morning. Ahmad specifically highlighted that Jammu, Kathua, and adjoining areas are expected to receive heavier rainfall. He also indicated that one or two spells of rain can be anticipated in Poonch and Rajouri districts within the next 24 to 48 hours.
The anticipated intense showers raise concerns about potential weather-related hazards in susceptible regions. The meteorological director noted that landslides, mudslides, and flash floods are among the possibilities during this spell, particularly in areas prone to heavy rainfall. Brief showers are also expected in other parts of Jammu and Kashmir, though the intensity may vary across different locations.
According to Ahmad, weather conditions are projected to improve from September 2. There is no major weather system currently foreseen to affect Jammu and Kashmir until around September 10. He indicated that from September 2 onwards, the weather will improve, and there are no significant weather events expected until approximately September 10.
Despite the expected improvement in weather, temperatures are likely to remain relatively high, with generally hot and humid conditions forecast across the region. Ahmad stated that the weather will generally remain hot and humid, though the rainfall may offer temporary relief from the prevailing heat. He added that today and tomorrow, the weather is likely to remain a little disturbed, especially in the Jammu division, and that brief showers could lead to some reduction in temperatures.
Regarding temperatures, Ahmad mentioned that the maximum temperature is currently hovering around 32-33 degrees Celsius. He said that a decline in temperature could be recorded following the expected rain spell. A more noticeable change in temperatures is anticipated later in September, with both maximum and minimum temperatures expected to gradually fall. Ahmad pointed out that after mid-September, a significant change in temperature is expected, with chances of temperatures gradually dipping, especially after September 15.
Meanwhile, Ahmad advised farmers to continue their ongoing agricultural activities while taking necessary precautions for weather-sensitive operations. He stated that farmers can continue their farming activities, whether harvesting or other operations, including safe storage, in the coming days as well.
