In a significant administrative development, the High Court for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh has a new Chief Justice, with Justice Pushpendra Singh Bhati appointed to the post. The appointment is part of a broader reshuffling of chief justices across several High Courts nationwide.
The Chenab Times has learned that the appointments, which include eight High Court chief justices, were announced on Saturday, following recommendations made by the Supreme Court Collegium in the preceding days. The Ministry of Law confirmed these appointments through official channels.
Justice Pushpendra Singh Bhati, previously a judge at the Rajasthan High Court, will now lead the judiciary in the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. His elevation marks a key transition for the region’s judicial administration.
Justice Valluri Kameswar Rao, who served as a judge of the Delhi High Court, has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court. Concurrently, Justice Ravindra V Ghuge from the Bombay High Court is set to head the Calcutta High Court. These transfers aim to bring fresh perspectives and administrative efficiency to the judiciary.
In another key appointment, Justice Sanjay Kumar Agrawal of the Chhattisgarh High Court has been elevated to the position of Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court. Meanwhile, Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi, formerly of the Allahabad High Court, will now preside over the Bombay High Court.
The judicial appointments also come in the wake of recent events that have drawn attention to the functioning of the Rajasthan High Court. Controversy had emerged following serious allegations levelled against the acting Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court, Sanjeev Prakash Sharma, by a Supreme Court judge, Sandeep Mehta. These judicial appointments are expected to reinforce the integrity and smooth functioning of the court system.
Further appointments include Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, who has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the same court, ensuring continuity and leadership. Justice Krushna Ram Mohapatra of the Orissa High Court has been transferred to become the Chief Justice of the Chhattisgarh High Court.
Rounding out the significant appointments, Justice Alpesh Yeshwant Kogje, who served as a judge of the Gujarat High Court, will now head the Madhya Pradesh High Court. These comprehensive changes across multiple High Courts underscore a concerted effort to strengthen the judicial framework and ensure effective administration of justice throughout the country.
