Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is currently investigating allegations of sexual harassment leveled against a professor. The inquiry was initiated after eleven students formally registered their complaints with the university’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC).
The Chenab Times has learned that these complaints were submitted in May, prompting the ICC to commence proceedings to thoroughly examine the accusations. The identity of the professor in question has not been disclosed, and specific details pertaining to the nature of the complaints remain confidential. The JNU administration has not yet issued a public statement or responded to inquiries regarding these recent allegations.
This development occurs in the context of previous instances of sexual harassment allegations involving members of JNU’s faculty. However, university officials have stressed that the current matter is distinct from a prior case involving Swaran Singh, a former professor from the School of International Studies. Singh was among four staff members whose dismissal was approved by the university’s Executive Council in April of the previous year.
According to a university official who spoke on condition of anonymity regarding the Swaran Singh case, his dismissal followed allegations of sexual harassment made by an official associated with the Embassy of Japan. The complainant reportedly had professional interactions with JNU faculty members concerning academic events and lodged her complaint after her final engagement with Singh. The official further stated that substantial evidence supported the allegations against Singh, leading to his termination, and indicated that there had been multiple prior complaints against him.
A senior faculty member, also speaking anonymously, clarified that the incident involving the Japanese official occurred in May of the preceding year. The faculty member confirmed that the ICC conducted a comprehensive inquiry into this specific complaint, ensuring that both parties were afforded the opportunity to present witnesses and evidence.
In the latest case, the ICC is diligently reviewing the complaints filed by the eleven students. As the inquiry is still in its preliminary stages, no definitive findings have been announced. Consequently, the allegations against the professor are currently unsubstantiated, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
