Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has moved to bolster his administrative machinery with key appointments, naming two advisors and two senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers to critical positions within the Chief Minister’s office. The move aims to streamline governance and enhance the government’s outreach capabilities.
The Chenab Times has learned that John Arokiasamy has been appointed as the Political Advisor to the Chief Minister, a role expected to focus on political strategy, coalition coordination, and legislative planning. Concurrently, Vishnu Reddy has been designated as the Advisor for Public Events and General Matters, tasked with coordinating the Chief Minister’s daily public engagements, government functions, and public meetings. Reddy, described as a close associate of the Chief Minister, will also oversee aspects related to grievance redressal and public outreach activities.
These appointments follow closely on the heels of the formation of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government. The strategic positioning of these advisors is seen as an effort to ensure efficient execution of the government’s agenda and to maintain a strong connect with the public.
In parallel, the Chief Minister’s Secretariat has been further strengthened with the appointment of two senior IAS officers. Dr. P. Senthil Kumar, a 1995-batch IAS officer, has been appointed as Additional Chief Secretary-cum-Secretary I to the Chief Minister. He previously served as Additional Chief Secretary in the Health and Family Welfare Department. G. Lakshmi Priya, a 2006-batch IAS officer, has been appointed as Secretary II to the Chief Minister. She was formerly the Secretary of the Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department.
These appointments are crucial for the day-to-day functioning of the Chief Minister’s office, supporting policy coordination, administrative decision-making, and the overall implementation of governance initiatives. The Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu, N. Muruganandam, will continue to head the state administration, overseeing the broader bureaucratic framework.
The inclusion of both experienced bureaucrats and trusted aides as advisors signals a comprehensive approach by Chief Minister Vijay to navigate the complexities of governance. While Arokiasamy brings a background in political strategy and campaign management, having previously worked with various political parties and advised other Chief Ministers, Reddy’s role is geared towards the operational and public-facing aspects of the Chief Minister’s office. Reddy’s familial ties to former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nallari Kiran Kumar Reddy have also drawn attention, suggesting a broader network of influence.
The appointments have not been without scrutiny, with opposition parties raising questions about the roles and influence of individuals without publicly declared official positions. However, the government maintains that these appointments are vital for enhancing administrative efficiency and political outreach.
The Chief Minister’s office, headed by the Chief Secretary, forms the apex of the state’s administrative structure. The secretariat, operating from Fort St. George in Chennai, is responsible for policy formulation, implementation, and coordination across all government departments. The addition of specialized advisors and secretaries is intended to provide focused support to the Chief Minister in managing these multifaceted responsibilities.
