In a significant move to standardize the appearance of its retail outlets, the Tamil Nadu government has mandated that all employees working in Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Limited (TASMAC) liquor shops will be required to wear prescribed uniforms from November 15, 2026. This directive aims to ensure a uniform and professional look across the state’s 4,048 TASMAC retail vending shops.
Uniform Specifications and Distribution
According to a government order, shop supervisors will don light blue shirts paired with navy blue trousers. Salesmen and assistant salesmen will wear beige shirts with dark grey trousers. All shirts are required to feature the TASMAC emblem on the left chest. Employees have been instructed to procure the approved fabric exclusively from state-run Co-Optex outlets by October 31, 2026, with stitching to be completed by November 10, 2026.
The state government has also sanctioned an annual uniform allowance of ₹6,000 for each of the 22,877 TASMAC employees. This allowance is intended to cover the cost of three sets of uniforms, including fabric and stitching, at ₹2,000 per set. The allowance is to be credited to the bank account of each eligible employee annually on April 1st. This approach was adopted to mitigate potential practical difficulties in procuring, stitching, and distributing uniforms uniformly across the state.
Enforcement and Background
Inspections by TASMAC officials are set to commence in mid-November to ensure compliance. Employees who fail to procure or wear the uniform after receiving the allowance, without valid reasons, will be subject to recovery of the funds and disciplinary action. Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that this initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance the professional image of the state-run corporation, which plays a significant role in Tamil Nadu’s revenue generation. For the financial year 2025-2026, TASMAC reported a revenue of ₹50,845 crore.
This is not the first time uniforms have been considered for TASMAC employees. In 2019, employees at Elite TASMAC outlets were provided with uniforms, including blazers, although that project did not achieve widespread implementation. The current directive applies to all TASMAC retail outlets across Tamil Nadu, covering supervisors, salespersons, and assistant salespersons.
