SRINAGAR: Political parties in Jammu and Kashmir, including the National Conference (NC), Congress, and independent legislators supporting the government, have convened meetings to strategize and present a united front ahead of the upcoming autumn session of the Legislative Assembly. The session, scheduled to commence on Monday, September 21, 2026, is expected to be politically charged with both the ruling alliance and opposition gearing up to address pressing public concerns.
Pre-Session Preparations and Alliance Dynamics
The National Conference, led by party president Dr. Farooq Abdullah and with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in attendance, held a Legislature Party meeting in Srinagar. The meeting aimed to finalize the party’s legislative priorities, coordinate with its alliance partner, the Congress, and prepare for anticipated opposition challenges. Emphasis was placed on unity among NC legislators to defend the government’s performance and ensure the smooth passage of key bills.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the Congress, which contested the 2024 Assembly elections in alliance with the NC, has signaled its intention to maintain an independent and people-centric legislative conduct. Despite being part of the ruling coalition, senior Congress leaders remain divided on the prospect of formally joining the Omar Abdullah government, a decision that has been referred to the party high command. JKPCC president Tariq Hameed Karra stated that the party would continue to raise genuine public concerns, asserting that alliance politics would not compromise their responsibility to the electorate.
Opposition’s Stance and Legislative Agenda
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced its intention to scrutinize the NC-led government’s performance over the past two years, demanding a white paper detailing its achievements. The opposition is preparing to corner the government on issues such as alleged corruption, outsourcing of government jobs, delays in local body elections, and electricity tariff hikes.
The provisional schedule for the week-long session includes government business, private members’ bills and resolutions, and question hour. Legislators are expected to raise issues ranging from power supply and water scarcity to tourism infrastructure and development works. The Assembly is also moving towards greater digitization with the wider use of the National e-Vidhan Application (NeVA) for paperless processing of legislative business.
Both the Congress and the BJP have voiced a consensus for extending the session, arguing that the initial schedule of seven sittings is insufficient to adequately debate public issues. The Congress, in particular, has emphasized the need for more time to allow legislators to raise and seek redressal for constituency-specific concerns.
The session is expected to feature discussions on administrative reforms and service delivery, with the presentation of the Annual Financial Review and consideration of supplementary grants also on the agenda. The convergence of an assertive opposition, unsettled alliance dynamics, and a substantial legislative agenda points towards a politically charged and substantively significant autumn session for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly.
