SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir government has announced a postponement of the provincial holiday in Kashmir Province, originally scheduled for October 8, due to the Urs of Sheikh Noor-Ud-Din Sahib. The holiday will now be observed on Friday, October 9, 2026.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the revised holiday schedule was communicated through Government Order No. 1614-JK(GAD) of 2026, issued by the General Administration Department on October 7, 2026. This order modifies Government Order No. 1894-JK(GAD) of 2025, which had initially declared October 8 as the holiday. The postponement is specifically for Kashmir Province and is in connection with the Urs of Sheikh Noor-Ud-Din Noorani (RA).
The directive has been issued under the authority of the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. The order, signed by M. Raju, IAS, Commissioner/Secretary to the Government in the General Administration Department, has been disseminated to various senior government officials and departments. This includes the Director General of Police, Principal Secretaries, Divisional Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners, Heads of Departments, Director Information, and officials from the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, Public Service Commission, and Legislative Assembly, among other relevant authorities.
The General Administration Department has informed that the official order will be published in both Hindi and Urdu versions subsequently. The revised observance date of October 9 aims to accommodate the commemoration of the Urs, a significant religious event in the region. This change reflects the administrative process of managing public holidays and ensuring alignment with important cultural and religious observances across the province.
The Urs of Sheikh Noor-Ud-Din Noorani (RA) is a significant annual event that draws devotees and marks a period of remembrance and spiritual reflection. The decision to postpone the holiday by a single day is an administrative adjustment to ensure the smooth observance of this religious occasion while maintaining governmental operations. The General Administration Department plays a crucial role in coordinating such public notices and ensuring that all stakeholders are informed of any changes to the official calendar.
This administrative rescheduling underscores the importance placed on religious and cultural observances within the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The Urs of Sheikh Noor-Ud-Din Noorani (RA) is deeply revered by the local population, and the government’s decision to adjust the holiday reflects an effort to facilitate broader participation in the commemorations. The provincial holiday ensures that many residents can attend religious gatherings and partake in the observances without disruption to their work schedules.
