Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir administration has officially notified the City Gas Distribution (CGD) Policy, 2026, a move aimed at significantly expanding access to clean fuel sources and bolstering industrial competitiveness across the Union Territory. This policy establishes a comprehensive framework designed to accelerate the adoption of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the policy, approved by the Council of Ministers, outlines an investor-friendly and time-bound approach to Piped Natural Gas and Compressed Natural Gas utilization in households, commercial establishments, industries, and the transportation sector. The policy envisages a phased rollout of City Gas Distribution networks to cover all 20 districts of Jammu and Kashmir, facilitating a transition away from conventional fuels towards cleaner and more dependable natural gas supplies.
A central tenet of the CGD Policy, 2026, is the simplification and expedition of project implementation. This is to be achieved through a single-window clearance system, streamlined procedures for establishing CNG stations, and standardized Right of Way norms. The policy also prioritizes gas connectivity to major industrial estates, including those located in Kathua, Samba, and Pulwama, with the objective of supporting industrial expansion and ensuring reliable energy access for these key economic zones.
The expansion of PNG and CNG infrastructure is anticipated to yield several benefits, including the provision of safer, cleaner, and more affordable energy alternatives. It is expected to reduce overall fuel costs for consumers and industries, enhance industrial efficiency and competitiveness, and stimulate greater investment within the burgeoning clean energy sector. Furthermore, the policy is projected to provide a significant impetus to local employment generation, apprenticeships, and skill development programs.
New employment opportunities are anticipated to arise in the construction, operation, and maintenance phases of the gas distribution infrastructure, as well as in associated service industries. The Chief Minister’s office had previously conveyed congratulations to the Minister for Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, and the Department for their efforts in bringing the policy to fruition. The notification of the policy has been described as a critical step towards fostering cleaner economic growth, promoting sustainable development, and modernizing the energy ecosystem within Jammu and Kashmir.
In a statement, the Chief Minister had articulated that the City Gas Distribution Policy is poised to broaden access to clean and dependable energy while simultaneously cultivating an environment conducive to industrial development and investment. This initiative is considered a vital stride towards the establishment of a cleaner, more efficient, and sustainable energy future for the region.
