Srinagar: The Meteorological Department has forecast predominantly dry weather across Jammu and Kashmir until October 20, with only isolated light spells of rain and thunderstorms anticipated in some districts over the coming days. No significant rainfall or snowfall is expected in the higher reaches during this period.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the Meteorological Centre Srinagar, stated on Friday that a light spell of precipitation might occur around October 10, followed by a similar pattern on October 13 and 14. These events are attributed to a weak Western Disturbance and could be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in certain areas.
Despite these minor possibilities, Ahmad emphasized that no major weather activity, including substantial rain or snow, is predicted for the region until the end of the month. The overall weather is expected to remain generally pleasant, punctuated by a few light showers.
While no significant weather warning has been issued, the public has been advised to exercise caution during periods of thunderstorms and gusty winds, particularly around October 10 and again between October 13 and 14. The department noted that there is no cause for alarm at present, but adherence to precautionary measures is recommended.
Farmers have been advised to continue with their harvesting operations in the coming days and to ensure that harvested crops and agricultural produce are stored securely. Travelers are also urged to remain vigilant and strictly follow any advisories issued by the local administration and the traffic department.
The statement also touched upon the prevailing temperatures across the region. Daytime temperatures in the plains of Kashmir are currently ranging between 27 to 28 degrees Celsius, while in higher altitude areas, they are around 20 to 22 degrees Celsius. In the Jammu division, daytime temperatures are reported to be between 28 and 30 degrees Celsius.
Ahmad indicated that temperatures are expected to decline gradually as the season transitions into autumn and winter. However, he noted that the ongoing dry spell might lead to a slower rate of temperature decrease than typically observed. The chances of a rapid drop in temperatures are considered very low due to the current weather patterns.
