Two teenage boys from Srinagar, who went missing while trekking in the Kangan forest area of Ganderbal district in central Kashmir, have been safely traced and brought to the Gund police station. The rescue operation was successfully concluded on Friday morning after an extensive search involving multiple agencies.
The boys, identified as Huzair and Minaan, had ventured into the Rayil Gund forest on Thursday. They reportedly lost their way and subsequently contacted the emergency helpline 112 seeking assistance. Following the distress call, a coordinated search operation was immediately launched by teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) unit at Gund, the Gund Police Station, and the Dial 112 unit.
Officials stated that the search teams worked tirelessly through the night. The boys were eventually located near the Rayil Bridge, in the vicinity of Rayil village, on Friday morning. The rescue operation faced initial challenges as the boys’ mobile phones were reportedly switched off, hindering direct communication and complicating efforts to pinpoint their exact location.
This incident highlights the inherent risks associated with trekking in forested and remote areas, especially when trekkers venture off established paths. Authorities have emphasized the importance of preparedness, including informing others about trekking plans, carrying adequate supplies, and ensuring mobile devices are charged and functional. The prompt response and coordinated efforts of the SDRF, local police, and emergency services were crucial in ensuring the safe return of the two young trekkers.
The boys are currently at the Gund police station, where they are being questioned to gather further details about their trek and how they became disoriented. Further information regarding the incident is awaited.
