Navanethem Pillay, a distinguished former UN human rights chief and a judge on the International Court of Justice, has been named the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. The announcement was made on Friday in Oslo, Norway.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that this year marks the 125th anniversary of the prestigious award, often regarded as the highest global honour.
Pillay, who hails from South Africa, has had a long and impactful career dedicated to human rights advocacy and international justice. Her tenure as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014 saw her consistently championing the cause of victims of human rights abuses worldwide. During her time at the helm of the UN Human Rights Office, she frequently spoke out against atrocities, inequality, and discrimination, urging governments to uphold international human rights standards.
Before her role as High Commissioner, Pillay served as a judge on the International Criminal Court for Rwanda and later as its President from 2003 to 2007. Her legal acumen and commitment to accountability were crucial in the court’s efforts to prosecute perpetrators of genocide and other serious crimes.
The Nobel Peace Prize committee’s decision to honour Pillay is seen by many as a recognition of her lifelong dedication to peace, justice, and the rule of law. Her work has consistently focused on holding powerful actors accountable and advocating for the rights of the vulnerable.
The Nobel Peace Prize, established by the will of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel, is awarded annually to individuals or organizations who have made outstanding contributions to promoting peace.
