Yogi Adityanath Challenges Akhilesh Yadav to Contest from Ayodhya, Igniting Political Sparring

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has accepted Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav’s challenge to contest the upcoming Assembly polls from Ayodhya. Adityanath formally invited Yadav to file his nomination from the temple town, proposing a direct electoral face-off between the two leaders.

The exchange, which has intensified political sparring ahead of the next Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, occurred during a public meeting in Balrampur district where Chief Minister Adityanath was inaugurating development projects. Responding to Yadav’s earlier dare to contest from Ayodhya, Adityanath stated, “You [Akhilesh Yadav] should also file your nomination from Ayodhya, and I will too; let us both try our luck once; why fight through disciples? The fight should be face-to-face.”

Adityanath framed Ayodhya as a sacred abode and a centre of faith and development, asserting that his visits to the city were aimed at ensuring progress rather than electoral politics. He contrasted the current development of Ayodhya with the tenure of the previous Samajwadi Party government, alleging that the town only received three to four hours of electricity and suffered from poor sanitation during that period. He also claimed that the SP government had imposed restrictions on religious performances and erected barricades in the city.

The Chief Minister further criticized the Samajwadi Party’s political strategies and its ‘PDA’ (Pichhde, Dalit, Alpsankhyak – backward classes, Dalits, and minorities) slogan. He referred to the SP’s Rajya Sabha nominations, alleging that the party favoured ‘Family Development Authority’ over representation for various social groups. Adityanath pointed out that SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav, Akhilesh Yadav’s uncle, secured one seat, while another was given to a wealthy businessman, questioning the party’s commitment to its stated principles.

In his response, Akhilesh Yadav retorted that a “gust of wind” would sweep away arrogance, referencing party candidate Pawan Pandey. Yadav suggested that a young ‘PDA Prahari’ would be sufficient to defeat those allegedly involved in the theft of offerings and donations in Ayodhya. He accused those giving clean chits to such individuals of being accomplices and expressed confidence that the public would hold such arrogance accountable.

Yadav also questioned the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister’s confidence, referencing the BJP’s performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections where the Samajwadi Party won the Faizabad seat, which encompasses Ayodhya. He implied that the BJP’s internal surveys might not reflect a willingness among their party members to contest from Ayodhya.

The political exchange highlights the significance of Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh’s political discourse, particularly in the lead-up to the upcoming Assembly elections. The construction of the Ram Temple has made Ayodhya a focal point for both religious sentiment and electoral strategy for political parties in the state.
