Veteran Tamil music composer Devanesan Chokkalingam, widely known as Deva, passed away on Saturday, October 17, 2026, in Chennai. He was 75 years old.
Deva was admitted to Surya Hospital in Kodambakkam following a sudden cardiac arrest and health complications. Despite efforts to revive him, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. The news of his demise has sent shockwaves through the film industry and among his vast fan base across India and Malaysia.
A Prolific Career in Tamil Cinema
Deva, affectionately known as ‘Thenisai Thendral’ (the breeze of sweet music), was one of Tamil cinema’s most prolific and distinctive music directors. Over a career spanning nearly four decades, he composed music for over 400 films in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada languages. He was particularly recognized for popularizing the ‘gaana’ music genre in mainstream Tamil cinema, bringing its energetic rhythms and local flavour to a wider audience.
His musical journey began in the late 1980s, with his debut as a music director in the 1989 Tamil film Manasukketha Maharasa. He quickly established a unique identity in an industry then dominated by established composers like Ilaiyaraaja and A.R. Rahman. Deva’s compositions played a significant role in the success of numerous films throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, contributing to the rise of superstars like Rajinikanth, Vijay, and Ajith Kumar.
Memorable Soundtracks and Versatility
Deva’s filmography includes iconic soundtracks for blockbuster films such as ‘Baashha’, ‘Annamalai’, ‘Aasai’, ‘Kadhal Kottai’, ‘Nerrukku Ner’, ‘Vaalee’, and ‘Kushi’. He was also noted for his ability to compose romantic melodies, folk-influenced numbers, and energetic gaana tracks with equal proficiency. His background scores for films, particularly for Superstar Rajinikanth’s, became an integral part of the films’ mass appeal and screen presence.
Beyond his work in cinema, Deva was also a singer and lyricist, often performing his own gaana compositions. His appeal extended beyond India, with a devoted following in Malaysia, where some of his melodic songs found a global audience. He received numerous accolades throughout his career, including the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Music Director and the Tamil Nadu Government’s Kalaimamani award.
Family Legacy in Music
Deva’s passion for music was deeply rooted in his family. His son, Srikanth Deva, is also a music composer, and his brothers, Sabesh and Murali, are accomplished musicians who have worked with various music directors. His nephew, Jai, is an actor and occasional music composer.
Deva’s body will be kept at his residence in T. Nagar, Chennai, for the public and film fraternity to pay their last respects.
