Tunis, Tunisia – Regional and international stakeholders convened in Tunis from October 12-14, 2026, for the Second Arab Regional Forum on Early Warning Systems and Disaster Preparedness. The forum aimed to accelerate the development and implementation of robust early warning mechanisms and enhance disaster preparedness across the Arab region, aligning with the global ‘Early Warnings for All’ initiative.
The Chenab Times has learned that the three-day event brought together a diverse group of participants, including representatives from national disaster management authorities, meteorological agencies, humanitarian organizations, academic institutions, and international development partners. The discussions focused on identifying key challenges, sharing best practices, and fostering collaboration to strengthen resilience against natural and human-induced disasters.
Enhancing Preparedness in a Vulnerable Region
The forum underscored the critical need for effective early warning systems in the Arab world, a region susceptible to various hazards such as floods, droughts, heatwaves, and seismic activities. Participants highlighted the importance of integrating scientific data, traditional knowledge, and community-based approaches to ensure that warnings are timely, accurate, and reach the most vulnerable populations.
Discussions delved into the technological advancements and innovations that can improve the collection, analysis, and dissemination of hazard information. This included exploring the potential of artificial intelligence, big data analytics, and advanced remote sensing technologies in enhancing forecasting capabilities and real-time monitoring.
The ‘Early Warnings for All’ Initiative
A significant focus of the forum was the ‘Early Warnings for All’ initiative, a United Nations-led effort launched in 2022 with the ambitious goal of ensuring that every person on Earth is protected by early warning systems by 2027. The Arab Regional Forum served as a platform for countries to assess their progress towards this target and to develop concrete action plans for its successful implementation.
Participants shared experiences on how to overcome barriers to early warning system deployment, including issues related to funding, institutional coordination, technical capacity, and public awareness. The need for sustained investment in disaster risk reduction, with a particular emphasis on early warning and preparedness, was a recurring theme.
Fostering Regional Cooperation and Knowledge Sharing
The forum provided a crucial space for knowledge exchange and networking among Arab countries. Case studies were presented illustrating successful early warning system implementations and disaster preparedness strategies that have mitigated the impact of disasters in various contexts. These included examples of how enhanced communication protocols and multi-hazard early warning systems have saved lives and protected livelihoods.
Emphasis was placed on the importance of strengthening regional cooperation mechanisms, enabling countries to share resources, expertise, and data. Such collaboration is vital for addressing transboundary risks and for building a more resilient Arab region capable of effectively managing the increasing challenges posed by climate change and other evolving threats.
