Solan, Himachal Pradesh – The festive spirit in Solan city is being overshadowed by escalating road encroachments, significantly disrupting pedestrian movement and exacerbating traffic congestion. Street hawkers, alongside traders extending their displays onto public thoroughfares, have narrowed essential routes, posing considerable inconvenience to residents and visitors alike during the peak shopping season.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the primary issue stems from traders seeking to capitalize on the increased customer traffic by exhibiting goods such as clothing, food items, decorative pieces, and household utensils outside their establishments. This practice, particularly prevalent on internal city roads and extending onto the main Mall Road and Rajgarh Road, effectively reduces the available space for pedestrians and vehicles.
While district administration teams periodically conduct anti-encroachment drives, particularly along the Mall Road and Rajgarh Road, the problem proves persistent, with temporary structures and displays reappearing shortly after their removal. The narrowness of these thoroughfares, especially the Mall Road which serves as the city’s commercial nucleus, makes pedestrian navigation challenging, forcing shoppers to navigate through crowded aisles created by vendors.
The influx of shoppers from neighboring areas for festive purchases further intensifies the problem. These visitors often encounter significant traffic jams, a common occurrence on the Mall Road due to the combined effect of encroaching hawkers and the regular passage of buses. These buses, serving routes to Rajgarh and the educational institutions in Sultanpur, also contribute to the daily congestion as they pick up and drop off passengers within the city limits.
Solan, serving as the district headquarters, attracts a considerable number of people not only from within the district but also from adjoining districts like Shimla and Sirmaur, further amplifying the daily visitor count. This constant flow of traffic, coupled with the reduced road width, makes even routine travel difficult. Residents have voiced concerns about the increased risk involved in crossing roads, especially during peak hours, and the significant time delays incurred when attempting to reach essential services like hospitals during emergencies.
The commercial activity in Solan is largely concentrated within a few kilometers on the Mall and Rajgarh Roads. This limited commercial zone, combined with the persistent issue of encroachments, has led to a perennial problem of congestion that the city faces year after year, particularly during festive periods.
