Shimla police have apprehended three individuals identified as interstate drug suppliers in Chandigarh, acting on leads from two separate drug seizure cases in Himachal Pradesh.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the operation involved meticulous investigation, including analysis of digital evidence, call detail records, CCTV footage, and financial transactions, to dismantle the supply chain.
Addressing reporters in Shimla, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), City, Mehar Panwar detailed the successful operation. The initial case, registered on October 11, 2026, led to the arrest of Bhuvnesh Chauhan and Gulshan Thakur, who were found in possession of approximately 22 grams of ‘chitta’, a colloquial term for heroin.
The subsequent investigation into this case involved thorough interrogation of the arrested individuals. Police analysed digital footprints, including call data records and financial exchanges, which pointed towards Sajan and Vikas, residents of Ferozepur, as the source of the contraband. While Vikas was identified as the direct supplier of the ‘chitta’ to Chauhan and Thakur, Sajan’s bank account was reportedly used for transferring the payment for the purchase. Based on this intelligence, a dedicated team was dispatched to Chandigarh, leading to the arrest of both Sajan and Vikas.
In a separate incident, registered on September 27, 2026, the district police had arrested Kshitil Verma in Shoghi with six grams of ‘chitta’. A case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was promptly filed, and a comprehensive investigation was launched.
During the course of this investigation, police uncovered that Verma had procured the drugs from Rohit, who resides in Manimajra, a locality within Chandigarh. Following this discovery, another police team was deployed to Chandigarh. This team successfully apprehended Rohit, thereby expanding the scope of the crackdown on drug trafficking networks operating across state borders.
The arrests underscore the persistent challenge posed by drug trafficking networks that operate across state boundaries, exploiting inter-state movement to distribute illicit substances. The success of the Shimla police highlights the importance of detailed investigative techniques, including digital forensics and financial analysis, in tracing and apprehending individuals involved in such criminal activities. The collaboration and information sharing between police forces of different states, as demonstrated in this operation involving Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh, are crucial in combating organised crime.
Drug trafficking continues to be a significant concern for law enforcement agencies across India, with ‘chitta’ and other synthetic drugs posing a particular threat to public health and safety. Authorities have consistently emphasised the need for a multi-pronged approach, involving strict enforcement, rehabilitation programs, and public awareness campaigns, to tackle the menace of drug abuse effectively. The ongoing efforts by police forces across the country aim to disrupt these networks and prevent the flow of illegal narcotics into communities. The arrests made by the Shimla police are part of these broader efforts to curb drug peddling and its associated societal impacts. Further investigations are likely to ascertain the full extent of these networks and identify other potential collaborators.
