Four young boxers at Khalsa College in Amritsar recently experienced a dream come true as they met and trained with renowned figures in Indian boxing. Moikhik Dawar, Shubhbir Lal, Chahat, and Manas, who had previously represented their school at the Under-17 School Nationals, were given the invaluable opportunity to interact with Dronacharya Award recipient Swatantar Raj Singh and Arjuna Awardee Dharmendra Singh Yadav.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the young athletes, alongside over 80 other boxers training at the college’s centre, received firsthand insights and crucial tips from the veteran pugilists and coaches. The session marked a significant moment for the aspiring boxers, offering them a blend of inspiration and practical advice from individuals with extensive experience in the sport.
Dharmendra Singh Yadav, who became the first Indian boxer to turn professional in 1995, shared his experiences from representing India in 19 international events between 1989 and 1994. During his peak career, Yadav secured three silver and seven bronze medals, including a bronze at the 1990 Asian Championship. Currently employed with the Delhi Police, Yadav is slated to receive the Dronacharya Award 2025 this month. He engaged with the young boxers, imparting guidance on developing robust boxing techniques and expressed his intention to visit the Golden Temple for spiritual reflection.
Swatantar Raj Singh, a former All-India Inter-University champion and national-level player, brings nearly five decades of association with boxing to his coaching. His role in nurturing numerous boxers who have gone on to represent India at the international level is well-documented. Singh has been instrumental in training 12 Olympians and 13 Arjuna Award recipients. His protégés include prominent Indian boxers such as Dharmendra Singh Yadav himself, Jayadev Bisht, Sandeep Malik, Gurcharan Singh, and Manoj Pingle.
The interaction provided a unique platform for the aspiring boxers to connect with their idols, understanding the dedication and strategic approach required to excel in professional boxing. The presence of such distinguished personalities underscored the importance of mentorship and continuous learning in the pursuit of sporting excellence. The aspiring pugilists were encouraged to apply the lessons learned to their training regimens, with the aim of improving their skills and potentially carving out their own successful careers in the sport.
Khalsa College, with its established training centre, continues to be a hub for athletic development in the region. The engagement with boxing luminaries like Swatantar Raj Singh and Dharmendra Singh Yadav highlights the institution’s commitment to providing its students with unparalleled opportunities to learn from the best in their respective fields. Such events are pivotal in shaping the future of sports in India, inspiring the next generation of athletes to aim for national and international success. The exchange was viewed as a significant step in the development of boxing talent within Amritsar and beyond, fostering a culture of aspiration and dedication among the young trainees.
The advice shared by the veteran boxers ranged from technical nuances of the sport to the mental fortitude required to compete at high levels. They emphasized the importance of discipline, rigorous training, and strategic thinking in overcoming opponents. The young boxers listened intently, absorbing the wisdom imparted by individuals who have themselves navigated the challenges and triumphs of the professional boxing circuit.
The visit served as a powerful reminder that success in any field, particularly in competitive sports, is a journey that requires sustained effort, expert guidance, and unwavering passion. For the boxers at Khalsa College, the encounter with Swatantar Raj Singh and Dharmendra Singh Yadav was more than just a meeting; it was a transformative experience that is expected to fuel their ambition and refine their approach to the sport. The long-term impact of such interactions is crucial for the growth of sports infrastructure and talent development across the country, fostering a robust ecosystem for aspiring athletes.
