The Himachal Pradesh Police have implemented enhanced security measures, including the deployment of quick response teams and intensified vigilance at vulnerable points across the state, to ensure the safety and security of citizens during the Diwali festival.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the Director General of Police (DGP) has issued directives for comprehensive statewide arrangements focusing on security, fire safety, and emergency response to facilitate peaceful and secure Diwali celebrations.

The DGP has also formally requested the Director General of Home Guards, Civil Defence and Fire Services, to undertake specialized fire safety preparedness measures throughout Himachal Pradesh. This includes the proactive identification of areas prone to fire incidents.

Strategic deployment of fire engines and quick response vehicles has been emphasized, along with the positioning of trained personnel in crowded markets, shopping complexes, densely populated residential areas, and other locations deemed vulnerable, particularly during the peak evening hours when celebrations are at their height.

Fire stations have been instructed to maintain a heightened state of readiness, ensuring all equipment is fully operational, adequate manpower is available, water reserves are sufficient, and arrangements for immediate reinforcements are in place. Fire control rooms are to be adequately strengthened and are expected to maintain close coordination with the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS-112), police control rooms, district administrations, and health authorities to facilitate swift and integrated emergency responses.

A specific focus has been placed on preventive fire safety inspections. Public awareness campaigns regarding the safe handling of firecrackers and the use of electrical decorations are also being prioritized. Ensuring unobstructed access for emergency vehicles to all areas is another critical aspect of the preparedness plan. Senior officers have been tasked with personally overseeing these preparedness measures.

The DGP stated that the effectiveness of the preparedness efforts would be evaluated not only by the speed of response to emergencies but also by the success achieved in preventing them. He highlighted that even minor oversights in crowded localities could lead to significant consequences.

The police chief appealed to the general public, traders, and market associations to exercise caution, adhere to safety guidelines, and report any emergent situations promptly by dialing the national emergency helpline number 112. The aim is to foster a collaborative approach to ensuring a safe festive period.
