Palampur House Fire Extinguished, Decorative Lights Suspected Cause

A fire that erupted in a residential house in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, on Friday night caused extensive damage estimated at approximately Rs 15 lakh. The blaze, believed to have been triggered by electronic decorative lamps, rapidly spread through the first-floor drawing room, engulfing household belongings and the building structure.

Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the incident occurred in Ward No. 3, near the Palampur police station. The fire reportedly originated from decorative lights installed on a 3D PVC wall in the drawing room of the house belonging to Dheeraj Khanna. The quick progression of the flames, fueled by the PVC materials, extended to adjoining rooms.

Family members recounted being in an adjacent room at approximately 8:15 pm when they observed smoke emanating from the drawing room. Upon investigating, they found the room filled with smoke, severely reducing visibility, and the fire already had a significant hold on the first floor.

The occupants were promptly evacuated, and neighbours were alerted to the emergency. Before the arrival of the fire brigade, the flames had consumed the sofa, curtains, tables, and other furniture within the affected area.

The Fire Department received the distress call around 8:40 pm. A team, comprising Fire Officer Umesh Kumar, three other firemen, and a driver, was dispatched to the scene with a fire tender. Through sustained efforts for nearly an hour, firefighters managed to bring the conflagration under control, thereby averting a larger disaster and preventing its spread to other parts of the building.

According to Fire Officer Sunder Kumar, the total damage sustained by the property was assessed at Rs 15 lakh. However, he also noted that the swift and decisive intervention of the fire brigade was instrumental in salvaging property valued at over Rs 50 lakh.

Fortunately, the incident resulted in no loss of life or any reported injuries. Personnel from the adjacent Palampur police station and the police residential complex also responded swiftly, offering assistance to the fire brigade and residents during the rescue and firefighting operations.

This event has served as a stark reminder of the potential fire hazards associated with the use of decorative electrical fittings, particularly when installed on synthetic materials like PVC wall coverings and within false ceiling constructions in residential premises. Such installations, while intended for aesthetic enhancement, can pose significant risks if not implemented with adequate safety considerations.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but initial assessments point towards an electrical short circuit or overheating of the decorative lighting system as the most probable trigger. Authorities are likely to review safety protocols and public advisement regarding the installation and use of such decorative electrical items in homes, especially during festive seasons when their usage is prevalent.

The economic impact of the fire is substantial for the affected family, with the loss of personal belongings and structural damage mounting to a considerable sum. The prompt response of emergency services, however, mitigated a potentially more catastrophic outcome.
