Three Weeks After Bail Granted To Three Kashmiri Students, Why They Still Languish in Agra Jail?

Three Kashmiri students who were detained in Uttar Pradesh in October have remained in custody despite receiving bail on March 30 because no one is willing to be their surety, according to The Indian Express.

Surety is used to hold someone accountable for the actions of others after they have been released.

According to The Times of India, the student’s lawyer, Madhuvan Dutt Chaturvedi, argued that if the students had local guarantors, the verification procedure would have been completed sooner.

Arsheed Yusuf, Inayat Altaf Sheikh, and Showkat Ahmed Ganai were arrested on the basis of a complaint filed by a Bharatiya Janata Party youth wing leader three days after Pakistan beat India in a T20 World Cup match on October 24, last year.

Members of the BJP’s Yuva Morcha and other Hindutva organisations accused the Kashmiri students of chanting “anti-national” slogans. In protests held on the college campus, they demanded tougher measures against the students.

The Allahabad High Court, on the other hand, noted in its bail judgement on March 30 that three Kashmiri students had been wrongfully implicated in a case stemming from “rivalries over trivial issues.”

The three students have received no support, even after being granted bail, according to Nasir Khuehami, spokesperson for the J&K Students’ Association.

“Unfortunately, the general perception of Kashmiris is that they are ‘terrorists,” Khuehami told The Times of India. “No one wants their name associated with them.” After the Pulwama attack, this tragic narrative was born.”

On February 14, 2019, a suicide bomber drove an explosive-laden vehicle into a bus transporting 40 Central Reserve Police Force officers, killing them all. Jaish-e-Mohammed, a Pakistani terror group, claimed responsibility for the attack.
