Sheikh Zafarullah to Join Congress Party in Srinagar; Likely to be Next MLA Candidate

Sheikh Zafarullah, a prominent District Development Council (DDC) member from Marwah in Kishtwar district, is set to join the Congress party today at a special event in the party office in Srinagar. Known for his viral speeches during the DDC elections, Zafarullah initially contested as an independent candidate and secured a notable victory. His compelling rhetoric and grassroots appeal resonated strongly with the youth, creating a substantial following.

After his independent victory, Zafrullah joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), marking his entry into organized politics. However, sources now confirm that he will be making a significant shift to the Congress party. This move is anticipated to be a strategic one, positioning Zafarullah as a key player in the upcoming elections.

According to sources from The Chenab Times, Zafarullah is likely to be the Congress party’s next MLA candidate for the Inderwal constituency. This constituency holds historical significance as it was represented by GM Saroori, a former Congress leader who served as the MLA from 2002 to 2018. Saroori left the Congress in September 2022 to join the then newly formed Democratic Azad Party, which has since been renamed the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP), under the leadership of former J&K Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad.

Zafrullah’s candidacy is seen as a direct challenge to Saroori, who now serves as the vice chairman of DPAP. The rivalry between the two is expected to intensify the political dynamics in Inderwal, as Zafrullah’s influence among the youth and his reputation as an independent voice in politics will be crucial factors in the upcoming electoral contest.
