The Supreme Court on Friday granted bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in connection with the ongoing investigation into alleged irregularities in the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy for 2021-2022. The top court had earlier reserved its decision on the matter after hearing arguments on September 5 from both sides.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), represented by Additional Solicitor General (ASG) SV Raju, had raised objections during the hearing, criticizing Kejriwal for bypassing the trial court and directly seeking bail from the Delhi High Court before moving to the Supreme Court. Despite these objections, the apex court granted Kejriwal relief in the case.
Kejriwal was initially arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21, 2024, as part of a money laundering probe linked to the alleged excise policy irregularities. Subsequently, on June 26, while still in ED custody, he was arrested by the CBI in the same case. The Delhi excise policy for 2021-2022 was later revoked amid growing scrutiny and investigations into alleged corruption and financial misconduct.
This ruling comes as a significant development in the high-profile case, which has attracted widespread attention due to its political and legal ramifications.
Further hearings and investigations into the case are expected to continue, while Kejriwal’s legal team has consistently maintained his innocence, claiming that the charges are politically motivated.
