In an unspeakable tragedy that has left two families shattered and a people in mourning, a horrific accident claimed two lives and left three others seriously injured on the Pathshalla-Bunjwah road earlier today. The victims, all part of a close-knit group of family members, were traveling in an Alto car bearing registration number JK06A-0705 when disaster struck at around 5 p.m. The vehicle met with an unfortunate accident, killing two women on the spot and severely injuring the remaining passengers.
The deceased have been identified as 25-year-old Mehrun Nisa, wife of Tariq Hussain from Udyanpur Doda, and 35-year-old Rehana Begum, wife of Ashiq Hussain from Jawalapur Bunjwah. Both women tragically lost their lives at the scene of the accident, leaving behind grieving families and a void that can never be filled. The injured include Tariq Hussain, 29, Mehrunisa’s husband, Muzaffar Hussain, 28, a relative from Udyanpur Doda, and Brera Banoo, an 18-year-old cousin sister of the deceased, all of whom sustained critical injuries.
According to reports, the group was on a deeply emotional journey from Tariq’s home in Udyanpur Doda to Nali Bunjwah, where Mehrun Nisa’s family awaited them. The couple had recently tied the knot, and they were returning for a customary cultural visit known locally as “firsaal,” where the bride returns to her parental home shortly after marriage. Tragically, this journey, meant to strengthen the bonds between two families, turned into a devastating nightmare.
Eyewitnesses and sources from The Chenab Times revealed that the accident occurred without warning. Mehrun Nisa and Rehana Begum—sisters bound by love and affection—died instantly, their dreams and futures cruelly snatched away in a heartbeat. The survivors, including Mehrun’s husband Tariq, suffered grave injuries. Tariq Hussain and Muzaffar Hussain were rushed to the GMC Doda, after receiving urgent first aid at the Health Centre Thathri. Both men have been reported to suffer head injuries, while young Brera Banoo sustained a serious arm fracture.
Local sources recount how Mehrun Nisa and Rehana Begum, along with their cousin Brera, had been filled with joy and excitement as they traveled back to Nali Bunjwah, eagerly anticipating the reunion with family. Rehana Begum, a loving sister, had accompanied Mehrun on this symbolic journey, while Brera, their cousin, joined them for this momentous occasion. Muzaffar Hussain, a relative of Tariq Hussain, also accompanied them, marking this trip as a moment of togetherness, unity, and love. Yet, in a cruel twist of fate, the road that was meant to lead them to a place of celebration became the site of immense tragedy.
The accident has shaken the entire community of Kishtwar and Doda, with grief rippling through families and friends alike. As news of the accident spread, villagers from nearby areas rushed to the site, hoping against hope for a miracle. However, by the time help arrived, it was too late for Mehrun and Rehana. Their bodies were brought to the Thathri Health Centre, while the injured fought for survival, their fate uncertain.
The loss of two young lives, the dreams of a newlywed couple shattered, and the anguish of those left behind only deepen the community’s pain and anger.
The people of Kishtwar, Doda, and beyond now look to the authorities, calling for swift action and support for the families, along with immediate road safety improvements like installation of crash barriers, so that no more lives are lost to the negligence of infrastructure that fails to protect its people.
May the departed souls of Mehrun Nisa and Rehana Begum rest in eternal peace.
