Suvendu Adhikari, BJP candidate against Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram, says he has sought rejection of nomination of West Bengal chief minister for not declaring six criminal cases against her while filing her papers

BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has raised objections over TMC chief Mamata Banerjee’s nomination from the Nandigram constituency. A former Trinamool Congress leader, Suvendu Adhikari has been pitted against CM Mamata Banerjee from Nandigram in the upcoming West Bengal assembly elections.

Suvendu Adhikari now says that Mamata Banerjee submitted the affidavit without mentioning six criminal cases against her. I have filed a complaint in this regard with the Election Commission (EC), Suvendu Adhikari told reporters on Monday.

“Mamata Banerjee is a TMC candidate and in her affidavit, she has not mentioned six criminal cases. This involves five FIRs from Assam in 2018 and one CBI FIR,” said Suvendu Adhikari, who switched to the BJP from TMC in December last year.

Referring to CM Mamata Banerjee, Suvendu Adhikari says she went to the Kolkata High Court seeking dismissal of one of the FIRs but her plea was rejected.

Suvendu Adhikari of the BJP says he has given all proofs for scrutiny to the EC and the Commission will look into the matter.

“It is for EC to see if these cases are pending, and then to apply their mind to it,” Suvendu Adhikari said.

He adds, “The rules are same for all – Modi Ji, Mamata or me. I have done my duty and provided all proof. Hopefully, EC will look into it and take appropriate action.”

Five of the cases Suvendu Adhikari refers to were registered in various police stations across Assam. At the same time, one was registered by the CBI in Kolkata in 2008.

The charges in the cases filed in Assam range from sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups), 120B (criminal conspiracy), 121, 198, 294 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) among others.
