Muslim intellectuals and scholars have been outspoken in their condemnation of the statement. Aaqib Anjum Aafi, a biographical researcher and scholar, stated:

Meanwhile, Mufti Yasir Nadeem, an Islamic scholar and Darul Uloom Deoband graduate who teaches at the Institute of Islamic Education in Illinois, criticised Malala and said she made a statement that apostates do.
