Prevent Afghanistan From Becoming Source Of Terrorism: PM Modi At G20 Summit

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the international community to guarantee that Afghan territory does not become a source of radicalization and terrorism, and he called for a coordinated global response to bring about the needed change in Afghanistan.

PM Modi also urged for “urgent and unhindered” humanitarian assistance to Afghan residents in a virtual address to the G20 Extraordinary Summit on Afghanistan, and emphasised the importance of establishing an inclusive governance in the nation.

To ameliorate the situation in Afghanistan, he continued, a concerted international approach based on UN Security Council Resolution 2593 is required.

“Participated in the G20 Summit on Afghanistan. Stressed on preventing Afghan territory from becoming the source of radicalisation and terrorism,” PM Modi tweeted.

“Also called for urgent and unhindered humanitarian assistance to Afghan citizens and an inclusive administration,” he said.

The UN Security Council resolution, passed on August 30 during India’s chair of the global body, emphasised the importance of maintaining human rights in Afghanistan, requested that Afghan land not be used for terrorism, and called for a negotiated political solution to the situation.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, PM Modi said that every Indian shares the anguish of Afghans suffering from starvation and malnutrition, and that the international community must ensure that Afghanistan has immediate and unimpeded access to humanitarian supplies.

“The prime minister also emphasised the importance of ensuring that Afghan territory does not become a source of radicalization and terrorism, whether regionally or globally,” the statement stated.

According to the MEA, PM Modi advocated for intensifying the regional fight against the nexus of radicalisation, terrorism, and drug and arms smuggling.

“In order to preserve the socio-economic gains of the last 20 years and to restrict the spread of radical ideology, the prime minister called for an inclusive administration in Afghanistan, which includes women and minorities,” it said.

“He conveyed support for the important role of the United Nations in Afghanistan and called for renewed support of the G20 for the message contained in UN Security Council Resolution 2593 on Afghanistan,” it added.

According to the report, PM Modi urged the international community to unite behind a common international approach, without which it would be difficult to achieve the required improvement in Afghanistan’s condition.
