Kalij Pheasant declared as bird of Jammu & Kashmir UT

Kalij Pheasant declared as bird of Jammu and Kashmir UT. An order in this regard has been issued by Department of Forest, Ecology and Environment. The bird is also known as “Lophura Leucomelanos”, is widely found in Mansar, Surinsar, Jasrota and Bhaderwah areas of Jammu and Kashmir, while Hangul continues to be the UT animal. Jammu and Kashmir had to adopt new bird as UT bird because black-necked cranes are only found in Ladakh.

What is the common/local name of Kalij Pheasant?

Wan Kokud or Ban Kokur (tr. Wild Cock) is the common name for Kalij Pheasant in Kashmiri language. According to CT’s Anzer Ayoob, It is the most hunted bird in Chenab region.
