Amit Shah meets family of a J&K police officer killed by militants

This is Shah's first visit to Kashmir following the repeal of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, and the split of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.

On Saturday, Home Minister Amit Shah paid a visit to the family of Jammu and Kashmir Police officer Parvaiz Ahmad, who was killed by militants in the Nowgam district of the city in June of this year.

Mr Shah went straight from the airport to Nowgam after arriving in Srinagar for a three-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir.

“The home minister visited the house of Jammu and Kashmir Police, Inspector Parvaiz, who was killed by terrorists,” a home ministry official said.

Officials said Mr Shah expressed his sympathies to the officer’s family.

On compassionate grounds, he also handed the police officer’s widow, Fatima Akhtar, paperwork for a government job.

In a tweet later, Mr Shah said, “Today visited the family of martyr Parvaiz Ahmad Dar and paid tributes to him. I and the nation are proud of his bravery. Jammu and Kashmir Police is making all efforts to realise the vision of PM Modi for a new JK.”

On June 22, militants shot and killed Mr Ahmad as he returned home after offering evening prayers near his home in Nowgam.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Union Minister Jitendra Singh, and Director General of Police Dilbag Singh accompanied the home minister.

This is Shah’s first visit to Kashmir since Article 370 was abrogated and the former state of Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated on August 5, 2019.
